July/August Injection Molding Innovation

New Steel Options Available to Moldmakers

Bohler-Uddeholm has added high tolerance edge milling, with chamfering and radiusing capabil
Chamfering and radiusing of edges, plus expanded surface machining capabilities by steel suppliers such as Bohler-Uddeholm will enable toolmakers to reduce their lead times to the molders.
ities to its lines of steel for injection molding, thermoforming and blow molding tools.

The expanded machining capabilities are at Bohler-Uddeholm’s Wood Dale, IL, warehouse facility. A Dah-Lih MCH–800 horizontal milling center, capable of processing plates with a minimum foot print of 12-inches by 13-inches, with up to a 53-inch cross-corner swing, will address the need for semi-finished edges and ends on tool steel bar and plate orders. It complements the Blanchard and Mattison grinding and vertical milling machines already in use at the facility.

“We made this investment in order to offer better service and capabilities to the plastics industry. This new option can help the tool builders meet the shorter lead times which are being demanded by their customers,” says Mark Appleton, marketing support manager.

“The block is already squared, so the moldmaker just needs to index and start machining,” adds Patrick Roche, regional manager. “A superior surface finish, tighter tolerance and improved repeatability from plate to plate can minimize the amount of finish work required on the components’ edges and ends, especially when combined with the finish chamfering and radiusing capabilities.”

According to Tom Crabb, operations manager, edge milling can be applied to a wide range of tool and mold steels. The facility maintains an inventory in excess of 2,500 items, which averages to slightly more than 5 million pounds of steel. All items are assigned a heat number which allows for traceability from initial melting of the steel through tool retirement.
